Nightmares can be a source of fear and anxiety for many people. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provided clear instructions on how to handle such unsettling experiences. By following these prophetic guidelines, a believer can seek refuge with Allah and rid themselves of the evil influence behind the dream. This article provides a detailed look at what to do when someone experiences a nightmare, including the dua for nightmares, based on the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
When someone has a nightmare, they should follow these steps:
1. Spit Lightly on the Left Side Three Times:
This should be done without producing saliva, more like a symbolic act of dry spitting.
2. Seek Refuge with Allah from Satan Three Times:
Say, A‘ūdhu billāhi minash shaitānir rajeem (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan). Repeating this three times helps to ward off the influence of Shaytaan (Satan), as it is believed that nightmares are often caused by his whisperings.
3. Turn Over from the Side on Which You Were Sleeping:
The Prophet ﷺ advised that after seeking refuge and spitting, one should shift their position. If they were sleeping on their right side, they should turn to the left, or vice versa.
4. Do Not Relate the Dream to Anyone:
The Prophet ﷺ warned against narrating bad dreams to others. Sharing such dreams can cause unnecessary worry. Keeping the dream to oneself, coupled with seeking Allah’s refuge, ensures that it will not harm the person.
(Sahih Muslim 2261-2262)
Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said:
If anyone sees a dream that he does not like, he should spit on his left side three times, and seek refuge with Allah from Satan three times, and let him turn over from the side on which he was sleeping. (Sahih Muslim 2262)
He should not relate it to anyone, so it would not harm him. (Sahih Muslim 2261)
The steps provided by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are simple yet profound in protecting believers from the harm of such dreams. By implementing these actions, one can seek Allah’s protection, maintain peace of mind, and prevent the nightmare from having any lasting effect.
Always remember that seeking refuge in Allah is the ultimate shield against all forms of evil, including the fear that arises from nightmares.
