How to Say Goodbye in Islam

When parting after a meeting or conversation, Muslims say: “Fee Amanillah” which means (Be) with the protection of Allah. It is widely practiced in Muslim society.

After that finally, Muslims say: “Assalamu Alaikum” which means Peace be upon you. (Abu Dawud, Hadith 5208; Tirmidhi, Hadith 2706)

You can say both together: Fee Amanillah! Assalamu ‘Alaikum!

Farewell Dua in Islam

When you are departing for a long journey or someone is departing from you, both should say this dua:

أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللهَ دِينَكَ، وَأَمَانَتَكَ، وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ

Transliteration

Astawdi’ulaaha Deenaka Wa Amaanataka Wa Khawaateema ‘Amalik

Meaning

I have entrusted your deen, your deposit, your final deeds, and the final outcome of your life, to Allah.

-Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 4957; Jame Tirmidhi, Hadith 3443

Another Dua for farewell

ُأَسْتَوْدِعُكَ اللهَ الَّذِيْ لاَ تَضِيْعُ وَدَائِعُه

Transliteration

Astawdi’ukallaahal Ladhee Laa Tadee’u Wadaai’uhu

Meaning

I entrust you to Allah. To whom the treasured things cannot be lost.

-Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 9230; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2825

In conclusion, saying goodbye in Islam is not just a formality, but an expression of faith, compassion, and spiritual care. The farewell dua serves as a powerful reminder that, while we may part ways in this life, we entrust one another to the protection and mercy of Allah. These parting supplications strengthen our bonds, instill peace in our hearts, and affirm our reliance on divine guidance. Whether it’s a temporary separation or a final departure, the Islamic practice of bidding farewell elevates the moment, leaving a lasting imprint of prayers and blessings.
